Although You Can’t Always Get What You Want doesn’t traditionally have harmonica in it, like a lot of Rolling Stones songs, You Can’t Always Get What You Want lends itself well to the instrument. You don’t necessarily need to play the melody of course, but it’s nice to have in your back pocket for an instrumental section or a basic to jam or solo on.
Personally, I like playing You Can’t Always Get What You Want in second position as it’s a simple I, IV, V chord progression: second position/cross harp is the only way to get easy rhythm playing going.
However you want to play this song on harmonic, I’ve presented the melody below. As mentioned, I like playing this cross harp for rhythm purposes; you can then play the melody for a solo or use it as a basis for improvisation. Up to you! All in all, there’s a few positions and a few octaves you can try this song on. Some positions/octaves have some bends in there, which shouldn’t be difficult for more experience harmonica players. For those who are still working on their bends, there’s a few ways to play You Can’t Always Get What You Want without bending that still sound great and still give you the ability to jam along with friends.
Have fun.

You Can’t Always Get What You Want in First Position – Lower Octave
Some may have trouble with the full tone bend, but other than that, playing this melody a bit lower is nice.

You Can’t Always Get What You Want in Second Position
There’s is where I like to play this song. If you’re playing with a singer, there’s obviously no reason to be doing the melody over and over, so cross harp is the way to go for chord work. You can then do the melody for instrumental bits or use it as a basis for improvising.

You Can’t Always Get What You Want in Second Position – Lower Octave
Cross harp in a lower octave for You Can’t Always Get What You Want is also pretty good, but may challenge folks who can’t get the full tone bend (which is quite frequent). At the very least, the melody itself is quite simple (the bend not withstanding), so it could be a good way to practice that full tone bend on the three draw.
