Summertime is a song by George Gershwin that originally appeared in the opera Porgy and Bess. Since then, it’s been covered numerous times, including by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke, and many more. Summertime has a wonderful Jazz/Blues feel to it that was pretty typical of Gershwin. To that end, Summertime works well in second position and probably where I prefer it if I want to expand on the melody and throw in some blue notes.

Summertime in First Position – Lower Octave
Give this a shot. Personally I don’t think playing the song in the lower octave gives it anything.

Summertime in Second Position
Second position mostly works for Summertime, except for the last note in the third line (“high” in the first verse). This note should be the major 7th of the key which doesn’t exist in this position. If you can overblow, you can do this by overblowing hole 5, but not everyone can overblow. I’ve put in a draw here instead, which is a flat 7 (a semitone lower than it should be). It doesn’t sound 100 percent right but close enough if a lot of circumstance.
