Song Title: Sweet Virginia

Artist: Rolling Stones

Key Of Original Recording: A

Harmonica Key Suggested: A (first position) or D (second position)

A Note On Keys And Positions: Mick played an A harmonica in first position for the opening, which is going to be easier if you just plan to play the song as recorded. However, if you’re willing and able to do full tone tone bends, you can also play the Sweet Virginia opening in second position. It’s a Country song but it also has plenty of Blues to it as well, so if you want to add a harmonica solo mid-way through the song without changing harmonicas, you may do better to do a Country/Blues solo in second position. It’s totally up to you!

Although the Rolling Stones usually have more Blues inspired Rock music, plenty of their tunes have a more Country edge to them, and Sweet Virginia is no exception. It’s not a harmonica centric song like Midnight Rambler but it does have a harmonica opening. If you want to play this song properly either solo or with a band, you need to include the harmonica opening!

Fortunately, the harmonica opening is pretty simple and should be easy enough to play for most people. As mentioned, if you want a bit more of a challenge, try the opening in second position. It has a pretty deep one tone bend that’s quite common for those playing Country; of course the same note can be hit in first position, but then you’re missing the opportunity to throw in Blues elements as well if you want. Lots to consider!
